Message from the President 2008 promises to be the most exciting year yet for the Alliance. This is the year Academy Place becomes a reality after six years of planning and hard work. We know the community will benefit from Academy Place but we are also excited about the fact that once completed, Academy Place will help ensure the Alliance’s long term sustainability so the organization can continue to offer important health and human service programs in the rural communities we serve. Academy Place is not just a model for community development. It is a also model for how relationships, partnerships, perseverance and faith can accomplish big things. As we have for the past 11 years, the Board and Staff will continue to pursue projects and activities that improve your quality of life. The best is yet to come! Martha J. Kemsley, RN, Ph.D. President, HCA Board of Directors
Message From The Executive Director During 2007, we had the opportunity to hear Arun Ghandi, grandson of the peace and non-violence leader Mahatma Ghandi, speak at St. Bonaventure University on how we as individuals can make a difference in the world. Mr. Ghandi encouraged us to Respect one another for this leads to Acceptance of others even if their beliefs may differ from our own. Acceptance in turn may foster Understanding of a differing opinion and allow us to Appreciate the strengths of the individual or culture while acknowledging that there are facets we do not agree with. He went on to say, “The only way we can survive in the world is if everyone else in the world survives.” Add to this Mr. Ghandi’s comments made in February, “We want to create world peace. But peace is not merely the absence of war. There is so much internal strife and that prejudice feeds into the national aspect. We have to change ourselves if we want to change the world.” The mission of the Healthy Community Alliance is to be recognized throughout the region as a preeminent rural health network, committed to health promotion, disease prevention, and building quality of life. Our hallmarks will be the innovation, initiative, and teamwork of our communities and our ability to anticipate and effectively respond to Change. We do this one person at a time and the change starts with us. Thank you for supporting and believing in us during 2007. We will continue to work to better your life in 2008. Sharon J. Mathe, Executive Director
